The Secrets of Old Lima and the Upper Neighborhoods

Embark on a 2.5-hour walking tour of Lima’s historic center. Discover the city’s iconic landmarks and its history, from its founding by Francisco Pizarro to Peru’s independence, proclaimed by General San Martín.

I’ll show you Lima, starting with the place where the city’s history began: next to the statue of Francisco Pizarro in the Plaza de Armas. I’ll explain the buildings surrounding it, then we’ll continue down an alley that leads to a monument honoring the region’s last Inca leader.

Next, we’ll see the Church of Saint Dominic, one of the most beautiful colonial-era houses, and Lima’s old post office. We’ll continue toward Lima’s river—the Rimac River—and the old train station, which is now the House of Literature. We’ll walk along a beautiful street to see the remains of the wall that surrounded the city of Lima during the colonial era and view the façade of the Church of Saint Francis.

View of the Congress of the Republic and Chinatown. We’ll stop in front of Lima’s most beautiful balconies. We’ll continue straight ahead along the pedestrian street known as Jirón de la Unión, see the Church of La Merced, and finally arrive at San Martín Square to conclude our morning tour. This square was built in honor of the Argentine general Don José de San Martín for leading Peru to independence from the Spanish Kingdom.
