Rich Medieval History of Luxembourg Free Tour

Discover Europe's rich history on a Luxembourg city tour! Journey from ancient fortress ruins into the vibrant heart of the capital, uncovering fascinating monuments and centuries of royal heritage along the way.

Despite its size, Luxembourg has been at the heart of European politics ever since the Middle - Ages. Founded in 963 by Count Sigfried, between the 14th and 15th century the House of Luxembourg produced three Holy Roman Emperors, making this small county extremely powerful in central Europe.

After its period of glory, Luxembourg remained at the center of European history, passing from one important dinasty to the other. First the House of Burgundy inherited the Duchy, extremely powerful in France, then it was the turn of the famous Habsburgs. From this point on, Luxembourg's trajectory became associated with the Low Countries, tied culturally and politically to the Netherlands and Belgium, until it got its independence in 1815. This period accounts for the economic, cultural and architectural development of the city.

Despite being relegated to the role of a buffer state in 1815, the fortress of Luxembourg was considered the best and most powerful of Europe, so much that it caused a crisis in 1867 between the Great Powers of Central Europe. Come and witness through its monuments the unexpectedly rich history of this beautiful but powerful country.
